  A notification issued by NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) in the year 2018 specifying B.Ed as qualification for Primary Teachers has been quashed by Supreme Court recently. The SC said the NCTEdid not apply its mind independently and it took the decision to include B,Ed as qualifying degree for primary teachers merely on the recommendation of the Centre. Before 2018, only diploma holders in elementary education could apply for primary teacher. Before the notification the qualification was D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) to be a primary teacher. Differentiating between the skills required for primary teachers and teachers for secondary or higher education the SC said the pedagogical approach required from a teacher at primary level is in a unique as these are the initial formative years for a student and therefore needs to be handles with care.
